Cristiano Zanetti Wanted To Leave Juventus - Sporting Director Alessio Secco

Juventus’ decision to sell Cristiano Zanetti for around €2 million to Fiorentina has come in for criticism from a number of angles, however, the Old Lady have moved to defend their decision.
The Bianconeri had been intending to sell Christian Poulsen, but coach Ciro Ferrara has now confirmed that the Dane will stay.
In an effort to clear some of the confusion, sporting director Alessio Secco has claimed that Zanetti wanted to leave Juventus.

"[The sale] was necessary," Secco told Tuttosport. "It was a numerical necessity to sell a midfielder - the opportunity to sell Zanetti came up and we took it. It was also the last chance to sell him, as he could have left for nothing at the end of the season.
"We have many midfielders: Felipe Melo; [Claudio] Marchisio; [Mauro] Camoranesi; Poulsen; Tiago; and [Mohamed] Sissoko when he returns [from injury]. It was also necessary from an economic point of view to sell and have a smaller wage bill.
"It was [Zanetti] who asked for a transfer, and we will not keep anyone who is not 100 per cent committed to staying," Secco added.

The sporting director also commented on Juventus' future transfer plans, insisting that there is no need to strengthen the full-back positions after it was suggested that they needed improving.
"I see the opposite," he declared. "[Cristian] Molinaro and [Paolo] De Ceglie only need to recover their fitness. [Jonathan] Zebina is an important player. And then there is [Martin] Caceres: he can play on the right, the left or in the middle."
